O SMART Scheme (Ocean Services, Modelling, Application, Resources & Technology) by Government of India.
Government of India started the scheme in relation to explore more about the blue economy possibilities around the nation and also adherence to the UN Sustainable Development Goal -14.
The scheme was launched by the central government in the year 2018 under the Ministry of Earth Science. With vital guidelines and objectives defined the scheme resulted into an successful project.
PM Modi ji has approved the extension of scheme with cost of 2,177 crores for future enhancement and to be continuing achieving more mile stones like phase 1 as mentioned below.
Objective of scheme
The primary aim of the scheme is research about ocean and it's behaviour. The scheme will also deal with services in connection with ocean resources (bio & non-bio) and all possible scientific observation and forcast related to sustainable exploration of ocean biome.
The umbrella scheme has 7 sub schemes
1. Ocean Technology
2. Ocean Modelling & Advisory Services
3. Ocean observation network
4. Ocean Non living resources
5. Marine living resources and ecology
6. Coastal research and operations
7. Maintenance of research vessels
The scheme functions under the supervision and implementation of Ministry of Earth Science and it's agencies such as
1. National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai
2. Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Service, Hyderabad
3. National Center for Coastal Research, Chennai
4. Centre for Marine Living Resources & Ecology, Kochi
5. National Centre for Polar & Ocean Research, Goa
The scheme has potential of exploration like ocean energy, Gas hydrates and poly metalic nodules & sulphides, Exclusive Economic zone, deep ocean missions.
In the phase 1 of scheme it gave benefits to lakhs of fishermen and fisheries sector, off shore industry, coastal states, defence of nation, shipping and port industry.
Scheme also made the nation voice strong at international forums and achieved milestones as per the aim
1. International Sea Bed Authority recognised India's potential in Ocean research and resources.
2. It got a leadership role among nations adjoining in blue economy
3. 6 desalination sea water plants were started at Lakshadweep
4. Early warning system was bought to place
5. Advancement in thermal energy was seen
6. Deep sea mining of poly metallic nodules
