PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana
PM Modi ji has approved the extension of PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana scheme for a period of 4 more month as the response to covid19 pandemic. The phase 5 of scheme would be from 1st December 2021 to 31st March 2022 with same all benefits announced earlier under the scheme.
During the phase of Covid19, due to lockdown and sudden hault of employment many people's like daily wage earners and other Poor's were suffering for food. So the Government decided to roll-out PMGKAY Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana relief package from March 2020 during first phase of lockdown. Initially the scheme was drawn upto June 2020 but due to impact of covid19 it was extended for five more months upto November 2020.
Under this scheme 5 kg rice or wheat per person per month to be distributed free of cost to 80 crore beneficiaries of the National Food Security Act. This was over and above the 5 kg already provided to ration card holders at a subsidised rates.
This year 2021, due to second wave of covid19 many states went under lockdown, so the scheme was made applicable from May 2021 to June 2021 with same previous all benefits to 80 crore people. But due to covid19 review and consideration of lockdown by states the scheme was further extended till November 2021. And now the government has decided not to extend the scheme anymore citing the said reasons mentioned below.
1. The economy is slowly reviving and open market sale is already available.
2. The states which feel there is need for more distribution are free to buy fro open market sale scheme and distribute to migrants and vulnerable communities.
Many people and active thinkers of society argue that this scheme shouldn't be stopped because
1. Pandemic still exists, unemployment remains at record high level and there is wide spread hunger among vulnerable communities.
2. Government should extend the scheme for six months and universalise the PDS regardless of ration cards for other state migrants.
3. Many also suggest adding pulses and cooking oil to the monthly entitlement given the recent rise in prices of these commodities.
Will govt extend the scheme ? Should govt extend ? Give you views in comments below.
