3 Farm laws withdrawal : PM Modi
Year long protest of farmers opposing the farm laws took a pause when PM Modi announced its stop on 19th November 2021. What were those farm laws ? Why was it opposed ?
Agriculture is considered to be backbone of developing India. More than 65% population is directly or indirectly dependent on the sector, it's timely review and necessary regulation is the duty of responsible government.
A view on 3 farm laws of India being opposed by farmers.
1. The farmers Trade and Commerce (promotion and facilitation) Act 2020 : this allows farmers to sell their harvest outside the notified Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) mandi's without paying any state tax or fee's.
2. The farmer (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Service Act,2020 : facilitate contract farming and direct marketing.
3. The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020: deregulated the production, storage, movement and sale of several major food stuffs, including cereals, pulses, edible oils, except in the case of extraordinary situation.
Government was trying to bring the benefits to farmers and break the monopoly of APMCs and allow farmers to go with direct contact with private entities and sell directly produce to private players.
Amendment to essential commodities was to ensure that private players can also stock foodgrains with them and governance cannot arbitrarily put restrictions on stocking and movement of such goods.
But farmers fear that if the APMCs powers were reduced slowly many APMCs would be shut-down and in long run private players power would increase and in progressively MSP would also be removed by government and what incase if private players would directly enter in contact with farmers and no proper regulations is made; then private companies can become future problem.
PM Modi announced that those 3 farm laws will be called as stop and a committee will be formed which will comprise representative of central and state government, farmers, agricultural scientists, agricultural economist to ensure decisions on various issues related to agriculture and making MSP more effective.
