Anti satellite Technology - ASAT missile

Anti satellite Technology - ASAT missile

Anti satellite missile or ASAT is a weapon that destroys or physically damage satellites. It was developed first by United States of America in 1959 to counter the erstwhile USSR.

Basically there are two types of ASAT program.

1. Kinetic ASAT program is when a physical strike means is used to destroy and object, like missile

2. Non- kinetic ASAT program is when non physical means is used to destroy or disable a satellite or a group of satellites, like jammers, lasers methods, cyber attacks, etc.

In 1960's USSR developed the same program to counter USA and soon was followed by many other nations in race to kill satellites.

China entered the anti satellite areana in 2007 by destroying an old weather satellite at high polar orbit. This invited the criticism of whole world due to massive space debris left after the test.

United Nation in the year 2018 made certain guidelines which was to be followed by nations actively seeking to test the Anti Satellite Missile test.

1. No nation wishing to test out ASAT capabilities should create any space debris.

2. If during ASAT test, any chances of space debris is created it should be carried out at low altitude of earth.

3. Nations carrying out ASAT test should notify others to avoid misinterpretation.

India entered the ring in 2019, Operation code named as Mission Shakti tested Indian Anti Satellite Weapon program on 29th March 2019. The ASAT test utilised a modified anti ballistic interceptor code named as Prithivi Defence vehicle Mark II from Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha.

The missile was developed by Defence Research and Development Organization, DRDO. The missile hit the target with accuracy of less than 10cm in the low earth orbit. The target of test was Microsat-R, a satellite which was launched by ISRO on 2019 reportedly built to serve the purpose of test.

The successful anti satellite test puts India in elite club with USA, Russia and China.

In 2020, Russia tested three ASAT missile just to check the trajectory path and in 2021 November finally tested and destroyed its own and old satellite creating huge space debris and making the international space station come under emergency mode.

In the competition of space race no nation wish to be left out. But certain rules need to be followed by all.

Kindly give you views on what steps should other nations take, if some State actively violate rules.
