COP 26 UNFCCC GLASGOW CONFERENCE 2021 - INDIA
1992 Earth summit gave rise to UNFCCC ( United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) and every year UNFCCC organizes CoP (Conference of Parties), in 2021 United Kingdom would host CoP26 at Glasgow from 31st October to 12th November 2021.
The event will welcome world leaders from more than 190 countries along with thousands of negotiators, researchers and citizens coming together to strengthen a global response to the threat of climate change.
26th CoP is important this year because Intergovernmental Panel on climate change IPCC (1988) published it's assessment report on Earth climate which highlights heatwaves, droughts, extreme rainfall and sea level rise in coming decades.
CoP comes under UNFCCC which was formed in 1994 and was established to work towards " stabilization of green house gas concentration in the atmosphere". It also list out a responsibility for member nations which includes
1. Formulation measures to mitigate climate change.
2. Cooperation in preparing for adaptation
3. Promoting, education, training and public awareness.
CoP1 - 1995
CoP3 - 1997 - Kyoto protocol
CoP8 - 2002 - India
CoP21 - 2015 - Paris - limit global warming upto 2 degree compared to pre industrial level
CoP26 - 2021 - UK
India at CoP 26, 2021 gave a commitment of "Panchamrit" to tackle climate change.
1. India will achieve net-zero emission by 2070
2. Non fossil fuel generation to increase by 500 GW by 2030
3. India will increase 50% renewable energy by 2030
4. Carbon emission to be reduce by 1 billion tonne
5. 45% reduction in carbon intensity
PM Modi also highlighted Indian Railways target of achieving Net Zero emission by 2030. Government of India initiative aimed at reducing 40 billion tonnes of emission though use of LEDs. Modi ji also asked developed nations to start financing developing nations as committed to achieve the set goals. Emphasis was given that India holding 17% of global population emits only 5% of GHG and still commit to reduce it further.
