USA travel advisory Level 2 for India - Rape & Terrorism
USA issued latest travel advisory for American travelers coming to India and highlighted "Rape" and "terrorism" as a major concern thereby putting India in Level 2 category for travel destination.
On November 15th, 2021 US State department has asked American travelers to exercise increase caution while travelling to India. It said " violent crime such as sexual assault" has occurred at tourist sites and in other locations. Indian authorities report rape is one of the fastest growing crime in India.
Although this is not the first time that USA has highlighted sexual assault as a concern but it has also flagged the same in 2018 & 2019. This is a growing concern for many other national travelers to India.
USA state department follows 4 categories of travel advisories for counties:
1. Level 1 - exercise normal precaution
2. Level 2 - exercise increase precaution
3. Level 3 - reconsider traveling
4. Level 4 - Don't travel
As per latest reports, 80 murders, 77 rape cases recorded daily in 2020 was revealed about India. In 2019, 32,033 cases of rape and crime against women were recorded. States like rajasthan (5,997), Uttarpradesh (3,065), madhyapradesh (2,485), Maharashtra (2,299) rape cases were registered in 2019. Registered cases to conviction ratio is only 27.8% as per data of NCRB in 2019.
The highest number of crimes against foreigners in india in 2019 were recorded in Delhi (30.1%), Maharashtra (11.7%), Karnataka (11.2%). A total of 409 cases of crime against foreigners including rape, murder and thefts were logged in 2019 according to NCRB data.
Although terrorism and insurgency in some States are a persisting problem, but crime against women's could be dealt with more strict standards. This kind of image of India will definitely impact tourism as well as relationship with other nations.
