Assam Manohari Gold Tea sold at One Lakh per Kilo
Tea is used as a common drink for refreshment or minor celebration of gathering.
India is second largest producer of tea in world and largest consumer of tea, consuming 30% of global output.
Even Ayurveda has tradition of herbal teas made using plant leaves or spices. The popularity was seen with British East India company making it as a trade item.
Assam is considered to be one among best tea producing state in India along with states like West Bengal, Tamilnadu and Kerela.
Manohari Gold Tea, considered to be a rare variety of tea found in Assam has broken its own record during an auction at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre.
In the year 2020, the tea was sold at Rs 75,000 per kilogram and in this year auction the Manohari Gold tea was sold at Rs 99,999 per kilogram; just about rupees one lakh per kilogram. Thus becoming most expensive tea sold at auction in India.
Suntok tea company, which owns the tea estate gives the unique details about the tea. The owner stated that the tea is known for its malty flavour and golden colour when brewed. The entire production process is done manually without any help of machines and only 80 grams are plucked each day.
The harvesting is done four times a year with short season gaps and only 4-5 kilograms of Manohari gold tea is produced in a year. Thus making it unique and costly.
Reason of Golden colour
The inventor of this particular tea variety in 2018 Mr. C. K. Parasher said during fermentation process due to oxidation the green colour changes to brownish and when on drying, the buds changes to golden colour. The entire process from plucking to drying and segregation takes one to two days time.
As the unique details about the tea variety attract the tea lovers but due to low production and high demand the price of such variety rises.
