Vaccination for children for Covid19
Prime Minister of India, Mr. Modi has announced that children within age group of 15-18 years will be vaccinated from 3rd January 2022.
A senior doctor from AIIMS epidemiology department has stated that government decision on vaccinating childrens for Covid19 vaccine is unscientific. As the doctor himself was one among the team members to look after the trials of vaccine in adults and children, the decision of government needs to examined.
Government of India has planned to start booster dose for senior citizens from 10th January 2022 and vaccination for children of 15-18 age group from 3rd January 2022, keeping in view the spread of new OMICRON variant.
The vaccination of children for certain age group was planned to normalise the teaching facilities in schools and colleges and reduce the worries of parents sending their children's out of home.
Recently, the drug regulatory body of India has approved Covaxin for emergency use as covid19 vaccine only for children aged above 12 years.
What is doctor view ?
The principal investigator of Covaxin trials and as a senior epidemiologist at AIIMS institute Dr. Sanjay K Rai stated that before implementing such decision by government, data from other countries those who have already started vaccination drive for children should be analysed.
Dr. Rai even in his tweet stated that PM Modi has been taking right decision at right time but decision on children vaccination was an unscientific decision.
How is it Unscientific?
Dr. Rai said there should be clear objective of vaccination and vaccination objective can be
1. Prevent further spread of covid19 infections
2. Prevent severity or death due to covid19
Incase of adults, the vaccination is not being able to stop the spread of covid19 virus due to mutation like delta variant and OMICRON variant.
About 50,000 infection are reported per day from UK.
But the vaccination is really effective to counter the severity and death, mortality is around 1.5% due to covid19 which has come down a lot in comparison to year 2020.
This means after vaccination, we may not prevent covid19 infection spread upto certain extent due to evolving different variants but we can prevent about 80-90% of deaths.
Risk and benefits analysis incase of adults proves that vaccination is huge benefit.
Incase of children, the severity of infection is very low as per available data, mortality is only 2 death per million as reported.
Since the impact of covid19 is not seen in children and considering that vaccination in adults have certain adverse effects on body, the vaccination drive for children may be started after analysing data of other countries like USA has started children vaccination 4-5 months ago.
This post doesn't justify or questions the decision of government, we just want to give you an insight with facts and data's.
