India State of Forest Report 2021
The India State of Forest Report
2021 is released by Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change and
prepared and published by Forest Survey of India biennially.
This is 17th
Edition of Forest Report for Indian states and union territories that was started
in the year 1987.
The report brings up the fact
that India has 24.62 % (80.9 million hectors) of forest and tree cover in comparison
to the total geographical area.
The total forest and tress cover
has increased by 2,261 Sq. Km since 2019. Forest Cover Increased by 1,540
Sq.km. and tree cover by 721 Sq.km.
17 States and Union Territories have more than 33% of land under forest cover.

The report classifies Forest into 4 types
1. Very
Dense Forest: All land with tree cover including mangroves of canopy density of
70% and above.
a.
Out of total forest area India has 3.04 % as
Very Dense Forest.
2. Moderate
Dense Forest: All land with tree cover including mangroves of canopy density between
40% to 70%.
a.
Out of total forest area India has 9.33 % as Moderate
Dense Forest.
3. Open
Forest: All land with tree cover including mangroves of canopy between 10% to40%.
a.
Out of total forest area India has 9.34 % as Open
Forest
b.
These type of forest holds the biggest share in
India
c.
Increase in 2,612 Sq.km is seen
4. Scrub:
All forest land with poor tree growth composed of small or stunted trees
The report also brings to light
that Himalayan and North East region of India is facing forest cover loss due
to developmental and agricultural activities.
The report highlights that the
mangroves cover has increased in India by 17 Sq.km thus reaching 4,992 Sq.km.

The report compares the total
carbon stock in forest from 2019 and found to be increased 79.4 million tonnes
(7,204 million tonnes total carbon stock).
India State of Forest Report 2021
has added new chapters to the report like
ü Assessment
of forest cover in Tiger Reserves Corridor and Lion Conservation area of India.
ü Above
Ground Biomass Estimation: the above ground standing dry mass of live or dead
matter from tree or shrub (woody) life forms.
