Roll back of Three Farm laws : Implication on India
The remarkable 358 days farmers protest in India came to a halt after PM Modi announced the three farm laws to be repealed by Government of India. Let’s take a look on the implication and outcome of roll back.
| Agriculture as backbone |
Agricultural Implications
As the rollback was a setback for a majority government,
which was trying to bring changes in agricultural sector will have to now bring
reforms under guidance of committee of various stakeholders by pleasing their
demands. Link
This will be difficult because in such a huge democratic
nation it will not be easy to please all the involved stakeholders including
government. The involved stakeholders would certainly argue at set points and
at the same time government has to keep larger interest of farmers and nation
at priority.
Secondly, after the rollback of laws will any future government
have courage to bring agriculture reforms? The question is a major milestone in
coming decade because no other government will try to delight farmers without satisfying
all stakeholders.
Political implications
It may be considered as a big setback for ruling party to
rollback the laws formulated for larger public interest. In the year 2015 at
the first term of this government Land Acquisition Rehabilitation and Resettlement
bill was rolled back. And in 2021, three farm laws was called back after protest
by many farmers and involved players across the nations.
Will people start protesting more and more in government policies
and reforms? Is it in best interest of nation? Government has already defended many of its
reforms in the best interest of nation like CAA, GST, etc then why not farm
laws? The stakeholders protest could really harm the sector as the government rollback
and further negotiations can lead to delay in reformation of new laws.
Economic implications
Repealing of farm laws and further analysis of laws could generally
be seen as bringing a new and fresh law to satisfy the stakeholders. But is the
satisfaction going to hurt the economy and stakeholders a large like farmers,
private players, national growth, etc at long run.
The demands of farmers like legal guarantee for MSP might
result into more hard code for MSP. The demands may further rise to infinity
and government might not full fill all demands and even if demands are full
filled that might affect the nations economy such as demands for subsidized electricity, water subsidies, irrigation subsidies, loan waivers, etc. In this
manner the rise of demands and sops could be hurting the sector and economy in
coming times.
Can government be challenged?
The farm laws rollback has created a question that is
government trying to make the reforms a principal or trying to entertain the
voters? If the farm laws were predefined to bring a good change in the sector,
then why were they repealed? what went wrong that government couldn’t make the
stakeholders understand the benefits of laws? The opposition has many questions
so does the public in general.
